3. THEATRE'S "YOUNG GUNS" -- TTB CREATIVE TEAM INCLUDES THE WUNDERKINDS OF BROADWAY,  LONDON AND LOS ANGELES.

Even while he was in college, and when he was still waiting tables as a struggling young artist in Soho, Jonathan Larson was heard to have said, " I am the future of the musical theatre!"

Somehow he knew that his dream of revolutionizing the musical theatre would come true! Although Jonathan's life was cut short by an aortic aneurysm related to Marfan's Syndrome at age 35, his goal of writing the next great American musical came true with RENT. He won the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for RENT just months after his untimely death in 1998.

The directors and designers on this West Coast and L.A. Premiere of tick...tick...BOOM! are all shaking up the theatre while in their 30's, too -- these young wunderkinds already have earned credits and critical acclaim on Broadway, in London's West End, in L.A. and in major regional theatres.  Between them, they have won Outer Critics Circle, Lortel, Ovations, L.A. Drama Critics Circle, NAACP, Garland,  Drama-Logue, CT Critics and Indie Awards.

They are the rising stars of their generation, and like Jonathan before them, they are bright lights and the "future of the musical theatre."

What have they done and what are they doing next? Here's a short snapshot of what our director and choreographer have been doing...

4. KUDOS FROM THE CRITICS. As tick...tick...BOOM! goes out with a bang in Los Angeles, here are excerpts from comments by the critics.

5.  A GREAT PLACE FOR PRE OR POST-SHOW DINING. Our favorite hangout before or after the show is Mark's Restaurant just up the street on La Cienega. Owner Chris Diamond has created a delicious and unusual menu (the beet salad is one of our favorites) and don't miss their chocolate martinis!  Their California cuisine includes a great selection of beautifully prepared steaks, lobster, fish and pasta. For reservations, call (310) 652-5252 or go to www.marksrestaurant.com.

6. WHO WILL BE THE NEXT JONATHAN LARSON?  TTB has teamed up with USC TROJAN VISION TELEVISION's program EXPOSED to help discover the next great young composer/lyricist. http://www.uscexposed.com/ for more information. Finalists will be announced at a special benefit for Rubicon Theatre Company's New Play Development Fund in October. Look for details in our next newsletter.

Below: A picture of our lobby display about JONATHAN LARSON's life at the CORONET. Come to the show early and watch a video about Jonathan's journey and read correspondence between Jonathan and his agent, see photos of Jonathan with his family and STEPHEN SONDHEIM, and more.

 7.  AN INVITATION TO CROSS THE RUBICON AND ENJOY PROFESSIONAL ENTERTAINMENT IN VENTURA'S DOWNTOWN CULTURAL DISTRICT.  Did you know that this production of tick...tick...BOOM! was originally produced by MICHAEL JACKOWITZ and Rubicon Theatre Company in Ventura? Rubicon Theatre Company has earned a reputation for producing innovative productions of classic and contemporary plays and for nurturing new works. The company is in its 8th season. Artists ranging from JACK LEMMON and JOHN RITTER,  who made their final stage appearances at Rubicon, to STEPHANIE ZIMABLIST, JOE SPANO and ROBIN GAMMELL (show below in RTC shows), have graced the Rubicon stage.

Rubicon Theatre Company is currently presenting two plays by modern Irish playwrights in repertory: GERALDINE HUGHES' gives a luminous performance in her own very timely Belfast Blues; and acclaimed international actor CONOR LOVETT appears in a Gare St Lazare Ireland production of CONOR McPHERSON's harrowing The Good Thief. Consider making the hour trek north to one of Rubicon's productions in the company's intimate 200-seat space in Ventura's Downtown Cultural District.

Rubicon's season ends in October with GEORGE BALL, JOSEPH FUQUA, SAM ZELLER, MANOUGH and more soon-to-be-announced in a powerful production of Man of La Mancha, directed by JAMES O'NEIL and choreographed by CATE CAPLIN.

The 2006-2007 Rubicon season includes a World Premiere musical revue entitled Back Home Again: A John Denver Holiday by RANDY MYLER, A. R. GURNEY'S Love Letters, By the Waters of Babylon by ROBERT SCHENKKAN (Southern California premiere), WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S Hamlet, Children of a Lesser God by MARK MEDOFF, a World Premiere TBA and A Delicate Balance by EDWARD ALBEE. For more information, go to Rubicon's website at www.rubicontheatre.org.

INDIE'S FOR SCOTT AND ANDREW! A critic for Entertainment Today and ReviewPlays.com recently wrote: "The spectacularly intimate remounting of Ventura's RUBICON THEATRE production of 'tick… tick… BOOM!'  is worthy of every award it's bound to attract like a powerful magnet at the end of the year."

It looks like his predictions are beginning to come true!

SCOTT SCHWARTZ received an award for direction of TTB, and ANDREW SAMONSKY received an award for acting at the 2006 Indie Awards in Santa Barbara. Andrew was in New York during the ceremony, but Scott represented the team and gave an eloquent acceptance speech.

Writer D.J. PALLADINO, who covered the event for The Independent, wrote,

"TAMI TAPPAN DAMIANO and BRENT CRAYON sent chills through the crowd performing the showstopper 'Come to Your Senses,' from 'tick...tick...BOOM!'"

TOP: SCOTT SCHWART accepts his Indie for direction from PHILIP BRANDES of the L.A. Times and Santa Barbara News-Press. BELOW; TAMI TAPPAN DAMIANO and Musical Director BRENT CRAYON wow the awards ceremony audience.

As incredible as the critic's comments have been, the most important critics are YOU, the audience members!

tick...tick...BOOM! has been a BEST SELLER on Goldstar Events, and this week, Goldstar's CEO JIM McCARTHY made the show the ROAR OF THE CROWD selection after reading 1,733 audience reviews of LA shows for the week. Here's what he wrote:

'If you're a fan of the musical RENT, you'll want to see this week's Roar of the Crowd winner. The semi-autobiographical story written by RENT author JONATHAN LARSON tells the story of a young man struggling to write his masterpiece before time runs out. Larson never saw RENT performed in his lifetime, but fans of RENT (and others) should enjoy this show. This production has been extremely well reviewed by Goldstar Events members. SHARON LASKA calls the show a "terrific production with very talented actors." STEFANIE HAMLYN says it is "wonderful and glorious and hilarious and touching."

BARRY GRUBS says that 'tick, tick...BOOM!' was an amazing experience." THEA RIVERA points out that "you could feel how Jonathan Larson's style and spirit sprang from this to RENT."

tick...tick...Boom! was an amazing experience. Although hard not to think about the short life of JONATHAN LARSON (played so adeptly by ANDREW SAMONSKY) I left the theatre happy for having had the experience. The cast is amazing. -- BRETT HUME

More than 60 audience members have written reviews of the show and posted them to our website. To write your own, or to see what others have been saying, go to the BLOG section at www.ticktickboomthemusical.com. Or, direct link to the audience comments here: http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=28646289&postID=115000066991329645/

4.  MEET THE CAST! FREE MINI-PERFORMANCE AT THE GROVE THIS SATURDAY! The Grove Town Square is the site of a mini-concert on Saturday July 22 at 12-noon, featuring songs from JONATHAN LARSON'S two musicals -- RENT and tick…tick…BOOM!, performed by the casts from both shows.  ADAM PASCAL, the original Roger from RENT, hosts the mini-concert.   The Grove is located at 189 The Grove Drive in Los Angeles .

The National Tour of RENT is now performing at the Pantages Theatre; the Los Angeles premiere of tick…tick…BOOM! is now performing at the Coronet Theatre.  ADAM PASCAL will be appearing in concert at the Brentwood Theatre on July 28 and 29.  The cast of tick…tick…BOOM!, Larson’s autobiographical musical, will sing songs from the production including “30/90,” “Come to Your Senses,” and “Actions Speak Louder Than Words.”

AL LARSON, Jonathan's father, will also be attending the event to share in the celebration of Jonathan's life.
